One of the most anticipated movies of the summer is The BFG, and we’re hoping to get a big squint at it at next month’s Cannes Film Festival.
Steven Spielberg has been talking about the rather advanced CGI that we’ll see in the film, which seemlessly blends motion capture with live-action. The director has previously sampled mo-cap, when he worked on The Adventures Of Tintin a few years back. Well, technology has improved somewhat since then…
“It’s a big job. There are thousands of effects shots. I think it’s the most ambitious motion capture of a character that any film has ever done,” the legendary director told Empire magazine.
Oscar winner Mark Rylance plays the title character in the movie, while Sophie, the young girl in the film, is played by newcomer Ruby Barnhill.
Producer Frank Marshall adds: “It’s two cameras that put BFG and Sophie together in the same shot. It was a big leap forward in putting CG characters in the real world.”
More on the movie as it comes in. The BFG debuts at the Cannes Film Festival, out of competition. We’ll have a full review for you after it plays.

Not really.
Avatar did it quite well back in 2009.
The scene when Neytiri saves Jake by putting the oxygen mask on his face was seamless.
