The Outsider movie: Jared Leto signs up for WWII film from director Martin Zandvliet.
Jared Leto is lining up his future, post-Suicide Squad movie roles with an action-thiller named The Outsider. The Outsider movie will be helmed by Land Of Mine director Martin Zandvliet, and will be set during the second World War. Variety also have some word on the story.
Set in post-WWII Japan, “The Outsider” tells the story of an imprisoned American soldier (Leto) who is released with the help of his Yakuza cellmate. Now free, he sets out to earn their respect and repay his debt while navigating the dangerous criminal underworld.
Andrew Baldwin wrote the script for the film, and shooting is expected to start later this year.
Zandvliet’s Land Of Mine is really quite brilliant, by the way. We saw the film at last year’s London Film Festival, and since then, and following its global debut in Toronto, the film has been snapped up by Sony Pictures, and is being lauded as a potential awards contender for later in the year. As well as propelling director Zandvliet into the spotlight, the film will also do good things for its star Roland Møller, who plays Sgt. Carl Rasmussen in the film, which is also set during WWII. Land Of Mine is a tension filled movie that is at times extremely difficult to watch. Featuring a brilliant young cast, the film is an outstanding piece of cinema. The photography is stunning with cinematographer Camilla Hjelm creating wonderful, sweeping vistas of a now-peacful Danish coastline, with the viewer always aware of the powerful threat that lies underneath. That can be used as a methaphor for this oustanding work as a sense of foreboding is always present, even during the film’s more upbeat, more comedic moments, of which there are surprisngly many.
You should really check that one out when you can.
The Outsider movie will mark Zandvliet ‘s English-language debut, and will start shooting in the fall, according to the trade.
