The 2016 Cannes Film Festival is about six weeks away, and today the opening film of this year’s highly prestigious festival was announced. Woody Allen’s 2016 effort Cafe Society will open out-of-competition at the festival on May 11th. It will be the third time that Woody Allen has had one of his films open the festival, following Hollywood Ending in 2002, and the brilliant Midnight In Paris in 2012.
Cafe Society, which stars Kristen Stewart and Jesse Eisenberg, is Allen’s 46th directorial effort, and tells the story of a young man who arrives in Hollywood during the 1930s hoping to work in the film industry, falls in love, and finds himself swept up in the vibrant café society that defined the spirit of the age.
You can check out the first official image featuring Stewart and Eisenberg above. Steve Carell, Parker Posey and Corey Stoll also star in the feature, which will be released by Amazon Studios later this year..
The official selection of films for the 69th Cannes Film Festival will be announced on April 14th.
George Miller (Mad Max: Fury Road) will head up the jury.
