‘Zootropolis’ debuts in the US with $73m; Becomes Disney’s biggest opener

ZOOTOPIA

Zootropolis (aka Zootropia) is the first Disney animated fare to be opened outside of the November/ holiday season, and it looks like the Mouse House’s decision to move it to a spring release date has paid off as it returning $73m in its first weekend in the North American territories. That makes it the biggest opening for a non-Pixar movie, and even breaks the previous record set by the colossal Frozen, which made $67.4 over the same time frame.

Zootropolis also opened this weekend in Germany, delivering the biggest ever opening weekend for a Disney animated title with $6.2m.

The fact that the film has been getting some pretty solid reviews has also helped its success – it currently has a Cinemascore of ‘A’ in the US and a current Rotten Tomatoes score of 98%. We are yet to review it, but at a screening early last month in the capital, it wowed the audience, closing to cheers and kids dancing around the auditorium to Shakira’s catchy number ‘Try Everything.’

The modern mammal metropolis of Zootropolis is a city like no other. Comprised of habitat neighbourhoods like ritzy Sahara Square and frigid Tundratown, it’s a melting pot where animals from every environment live together—a place where no matter what you are, from the biggest elephant to the smallest shrew, you can be anything.  But when rookie Officer Judy Hopps (voice of Ginnifer Goodwin) arrives, she discovers that being the first bunny on a police force of big, tough animals isn’t so easy. Determined to prove herself, she jumps at the opportunity to crack a case, even if it means partnering with a fast-talking, scam-artist fox, Nick Wilde (voice of Jason Bateman), to solve the mystery.

The feature animation will debut across the UK and Ireland on March 25th. We’ll have a review on the site very soon.
