Deadpool has quite literally destroyed the box-office in the north American territories over the weekend. The R-rated comic-book movie scored a huge $135 million in its opening weekend, which is about double what was predicted. The huge sum makes it the biggest ever R-rated opener, the biggest opening for a film in the US in February, and Fox’s second biggest opening weekend ever (after Star Wars Episode III: Revenge Of The Sith). A huge congrats to Ryan Reynolds and the team behind the film.
The big question is to how this changes things in Hollywood. Previously, films went through a huge, laborious process of getting chopped up to secure that PG-13 rating, whereas Deadpool went in the other direction – not worrying about the rating and even going after the harder certificate. The numbers do the talking, and there’s clearly a market out there for a slightly darker superhero movie.
Estimates suggest that the film has made approximately $260 million around the world in just a matter of days.
With the movie costing about $60 million to make, a sequel is sure to be rushed into production (it was apparently greenlit last week), and Ryan Reynolds is once again a huge property in Hollywood – and deservedly so.
