Earlier today, it was announced that the remake of The Power Rangers – where a band of ordinary teenagers become superheroes to defeat villainy across the land – has cast one of their most prominent villains, Rita Repulsa! Rita is an alien witch of humanoid form hellbent on galactic domination and was the arch-nemesis of the rangers in the original television series. Today, it has been announced that she will be played in the March, 2017 film by none other than Elizabeth Banks, most recognisably of The Hunger Games and Pitch Perfect fame.
The news was announced via the official Power Ranger Movie instagram account. Though it came as somewhat of a surprise to see such a big name attached to the project, when its prior announced casting choices are still so relatively unknown.

It’s an interacting casting choice, that’s for sure. However, in some ways, this is perfect casting as Banks as already proven herself a versatile actor across her countless roles. Frankly, we just can’t wait to hear that inevitable evil-cackle. Do us proud, Banks.
For those of you just joining us as the Power Rangers reboot slowly unfolds into fruition, and who are worried about another franchise facing the inevitable slew of ‘dark, gritty’ re-imaginings, worry not, as director Dean Israelite offered his opinion earlier last year on the matter: “I read the script and was really surprised by it and thought there was a really cool, contemporary, mature but still playful, buoyant and fun take on the material, and was updated in a really interesting way.”
