Before even typing this news I already know that it will cut audiences in half with its reception. After six years as the lead writer of the worlds longest running science fiction series, Steven Moffat has officially quit Doctor Who.
The talented writer will step down as showrunner after his final series next year (the 10th of the rebooted show). However, much to disappointment of fans (myself included) this does mean that 2016 will only contain one new episode of Doctor Who. The gap between now and this years Christmas special will now be filled by the upcoming young adult spin-off Class written by Patrick Ness.
Series 10 is slated to return the show to its former spring teatime slot where Moffat’s final 12 episodes will air. This will then leave Doctor Who in the very capable hands of Broadchurch’ Chris Chibnall for another complete series in spring 2018. Chibnall has already written for both Doctor Who and Torchwood before with episodes such as Cyberwoman, End of Days, 42, The Hungry Earth, Dinosaurs on a Spaceship and The Power of Three.
It is currently unknown whether current Doctor Peter Capaldi will continue on in the role after 2017. However, with former star David Tennant bowing out alongside Russell T Davies in 2009 (as well as Capaldi’s recent comments casting doubt on his future as the character) it certainly seems likely that he may leave too.

With next years series set to introduce a new companion and potentially say goodbye to both its star and showrunner, one things for sure…we’re all in for one hell of a ride in 2017.
