Although Guillermo Del Toro’s Pacific Rim received a mixed response from audiences and critics alike, I am among the many viewers who severely enjoyed the popcorn blockbuster.
Despite the lack of a complex or intricately layered narrative, the film was extremely engaging and offered some of the best escapist entertainment of the past few years. However, Pacific Rim still struggled at the box office and was only deemed a sufficient hit after the international numbers rolled in.
This made the decision of whether or not to greenlight a sequel even more difficult for Legendary Pictures. Ever since then there has been an irritating back and fourth regarding the progress of Del Toro’s Pacific Rim 2 and whether it will ever make it to the big screen.
Thankfully for fans of the Kaiju bashing blockbuster, Del Toro himself has taken to Twitter to clarify the films status. Check out what he has to say below:
‘Pac Rim 2 cancelled? Don’t believe everything you read. It’s still going and I’ll remain w it in one way or another!’
This may be far from a definitive conclusion, but at the very least it shows that the talented film maker is dedicated to making the sequel happen. Of course, this is all depends on whether Legendary Pictures have faith in the films ability to deliver a sizable profit for the studio.
Having said that however, Legendary Pictures has recently been acquired by a Chinese company (and also the worlds largest theatre operator) the Dalian Wanda Group. Given that the original Pacific Rim made over $100 Million in China alone, it may now be a priority for the company to produce a sequel. This is all conjecture of course, but it is definitely food for thought.
