The first Free State Of Jones trailer has been delivered online. The upcoming drama stars Matthew McConaughey in his first major role since Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar and will be on our screens from this coming May.
Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Mahershala Ali, and Keri Russell also star in the Gary Ross directed film which revolves around a Southern farmer (McConaughey) who joins forces with a group of slaves to lead a rebellion against the Confederacy.

Written and directed by four-time Oscar® nominee Gary Ross (The Hunger Games, Seabiscuit, Pleasantville), and starring Oscar® winner Matthew McConaughey, Free State of Jones is an epic action-drama set during the Civil War, and tells the story of defiant Southern farmer, Newt Knight, and his extraordinary armed rebellion against the Confederacy.
Banding together with other small farmers and local slaves, Knight launched an uprising that led Jones County, Mississippi to secede from the Confederacy, creating a Free State of Jones.
Knight continued his struggle into Reconstruction, distinguishing him as a compelling, if controversial, figure of defiance long beyond the War.
Judging by the new Free State Of Jones trailer, which we have posted below, this one isn’t going to pull any punches; even the trailer is quite violent in its content, and it looks like McConaughey is delivering another superb performance opposite the brilliant Mbatha-Raw, who was excellent in Belle, which was released a couple of years ago to huge acclaim.
This one is set to open in UK cinemas on May 27th, 2016 and in the US a little earlier on May 13th. We debuted the first poster and some images from the movie a couple of days ago, which you’ll be able to view over here. Watch the very first Free State Of Jones trailer in our player below.
