Is Bryan Cranston getting an Oscar nomination?

Trumbo review

We all know Bryan Cranston is an excellent actor, with Breaking Bad establishing him as a versatile and charismatic presence. However as Walter White faded to black a long time ago the question is: will he be able to cut the mustard in Hollywood as a leading man?

Efforts like Cold Comes The Night haven’t been setting the world ablaze, though his latest role looks set to put him on the map as a bona fide Walk Of Famer. Trumbo has netted Cranston a raft of award nominations, including a Golden Globe – itself a good indicator of that ultimate Tinseltown accolade, an Oscar.

Just for good measure, it’s been announced he is to receive the prestigious Actor Spotlight Award at the Palm Springs International Film Festival. This puts him in the company of Jessica Chastain and J.K.Simmons, both of whom went into contention for little gold statuettes post-recognition.

Trumbo sees Cranston play real-life screen scribe Dalton Trumbo. He famously got blacklisted by the House Un-American Activities Committee, whose puritanical mission to seek out Communists in 1940s LA wrecked many livelihoods. For an extra sprinkling of gong-oriented fairy dust he co-stars with Helen Mirren.

The ceremony takes place on Saturday, where Cranston will share the stage with Rooney Mara, herself receiving the corresponding Actress honour.
