His last project was space-bound and shrouded in secrecy, but details of writer/director Christopher Nolan‘s new film have now emerged, and the familiar subject matter will be decidedly Earthbound.
Nolan’s screenplay, titled simply Dunkirk, is to showcase a young cast of newcomers, reportedly bolstered by Tom Hardy, Kenneth Branagh and Mark Rylance. They’ll star in a thriller about the famous World War II evacuation.
The images of the mass escape, with boats being sent on a perilous journey across the channel to rescue Allied troops, are a striking visual record. Nolan’s output (with the exception of The Prestige) is rarely historical, and it’ll be fascinating to see his vision for a large scale war movie.
Emma Thomas produces and shooting begins in May on 65mm and IMAX at the real life locations. Nolan has been a passionate advocate of celluloid in the past and shows no signs of throttling back.
Warner Bros slate Dunkirk for release in 2017.
