With all of the dust starting to settle around Star Wars: The Force Awakens thoughts are now starting to turn towards the next installment in the saga, Star Wars Episode VIII, which will be release in May of 2017. The Star Wars Episode VIII script is done, and Rian Johnson, the genius that brought us the superb Brick and Looper is behind the sequel and will start shooting it in London in just a matter of weeks. With J.J. Abrams absolutely nailing it with The Force Awakens, fans are hoping that Johnson can match or maybe even better it. Could Star Wars Episode VIII be The Empire Strikes Back of the new trilogy? Abrams seems to think so.

Greg Gunberg, who has worked with Abrams on a variety of projects including Super 8, Lost, Alias and Star Trek, spoke with The Washington Post and stated that Abrams has reportedly read the screenplay for the next movie in the Star Wars franchise, which is written by Johnson. Here’s what he had to say:

“He read it and said something he never, ever says, he said: ‘It’s so good, I wish I were making it.’ He may have said something one time on ‘Lost,’ with Damon [Lindelof, the co-creator], but I never hear him express regret like that.”

Sounds like we’re in for a treat.

There is, of course, more Star Wars due in cinemas before then with Gareth Edwards presenting the first Star Wars spin-off Rogue One in cinemas in December 2016. That film will have nothing to do with the current series of saga movies, and will instead focus on a group of rebels that set out to steal the plans for the Death Star. We’re expecting that on screens on December 16th 2016, just six months before we get Johnson’s Episode VIII.
