Sicario sequel: Lionsgate and Denis Villeneuve reportedly developing a follow-up to the 2015 thriller.
One of this year’s best movies was undoubtably Sicario, and news reaches us today that a Sicario sequel may be in the works.
This is very, very vague news as we’re hearing that there could be whispers of a Sicario sequel through WikiPedia, where the following was posted on their Sicario page late yesterday.
Lionsgate has commissioned a sequel, centering on del Toro’s character. The project is being overseen by writer Taylor Sheridan with Villeneuve also involved.
There’s not a lot of other detail other than that. We don’t know who posted it, and where they got their info from. Still, a film focussing on Benicio Del Toro‘s bad-ass hitman Alejandro Gillick would absolutely be the way to go.
We loved the original movie here at The Hollywood News; it was just perfect, but we’d also like to see these characters developed some more in a potential Sicario sequel.
Here are some of our thoughts on the first film from our original review.
At its core, what really makes Sicario shine brighter than the rest is the certainty of edge-of-your-seat tension, aided by a bewildering and often startling soundtrack. Jóhann Jóhannsson goes above and beyond in escalating the integral concerns of the characters wonderfully, and emphasises the tension and drama in a way that I haven’t felt since first watching Jaws. It is a welcome take on the civil-war-esque relationship between America and Mexico, though frightening is the ingrained self-reflexivity of our own corrupt systems, even in the places that we must trust the most – the police, the government. An interesting observation is that Sicario plays ball – hard and fast – blurring the line between the necessity for the outright power-show of the United States as they seemingly crush the Mexican forces with hardly a casualty, and the glamourisation of its military. The audience will find themselves asking – does this really happen? Most likely, yes.
More news on any potential Sicario sequel as we get it.
