Lionsgate is said to be developing options for prequels to The Hunger Games franchise. All of the books, written by Suzanne Collins, have been adapted into movies (four very successful movies), so now Lionsgate is said to be exploring the potential prequel universe, according to Variety.
Michael Burns, vice-president for Lionsgate said that the first two films contained arenas — where the 74th and 75th versions of the Hunger Games competitions took place — while the second two did not, and said younger fans missed the arenas in the latter movies.
“If we went backwards there obviously would be arenas,” he told the trade.
“Whatever extensions of ‘The Hunger Games’ brand we pursue, the intent is not to glorify violence by arbitrarily telling arena stories, but to continue Suzanne Collins’s exploration of the concepts of just war theory,” Burns added.
The first film was released back in 2011 with Jennifer Lawrence leading as Katniss Everdeen. The last movie, Mockingjay – Part 2 hit cinemas last month. So far the franchise has made a combined $2.8 billion at the worldwide box-office (and climbing), so further movies are a no brainer.
