Mendes: Andrew Scott was originally set to be the villain in SPECTRE

Andrew Scott was originally set to be the chief-villain in the latest James Bond movie, SPECTRE.

Spoilers for SPECTRE below.

Sam Mendes took part in a BAFTA talk in the heart of London last night, and during his time here he managed to hook up with Empire magazine and drop an absolute bombshell. It seems that Christope Waltz’s bad guy Franz Oberhauser was not the original choice to be the overall mastermind behind the infamous organisation of SPECTRE in the most recent Bond film. It was going to be Mi6 chief Max Denbigh , played by Andrew Scott.

More on the Andrew Scott SPECTRE villain news below.

Mendes revealed that early drafts from the film had Scott’s Denbigh as the puppet-master behind the organisation, rather than Waltz’s Oberhauser. Denbigh was, of course, a naughty boy and eventually met his maker in the 24th Bond outing, but Waltz was definitely the big bad guy of the piece.

“There was a long period where it flipped and it turned out that he was the person who was running the show,” Mendes said.

I think that they made the correct decision to keep Waltz as the overall villain, especially following that unveiling towards the end.

SPECTRE has no officially grossed $750 million around the world, including a whopping $128 million in the UK. It is currently the 13th biggest film of the year in the US with is slowly climbing that chart in its fourth week out there.

Producer Barbara Broccoli last week confirmed that work on the milestone 25th Bond movie will start in the spring of 2016 with Daniel Craig most probably returning as James Bond. Sam Mendes will certainly not be returning for the next effort, so a new director will be sought for a rather unenviable task of following two massive movies in Skyfall (the biggest Bond of all-time) and SPECTRE.

More news on that as we get it.
