2Pac biopic lands a new director in Benny Boom

The Tupac Shakur/ 2Pac biopic may have found its director. Music video helmer Benny Boom is said to be in talks to direct the long-planned biopic of the legendary rap star, so reports The Hollywood Reporter.

Benny Boom is responsible for dozens of music videos for many hip-hop artists including Nicki Minaj, Sean Paul, Nas, Amerie, Kelly Rowland, Monica, Keyshia Cole, Mario, Ciara, Cassidy, Lil’ Kim, LL Cool J, Nelly, P. Diddy, 50 Cent and many others.

The 2Pac biopic wouldn’t be his first feature however. Boom helmed the 2011 DTV sequel S.W.A.T.: Firefight and previously Next Day Air. He takes control of the 2Pac biopic after the likes of Carl Franklin and John Singleton left the project.

The project is currently housed over at Morgan Creek, but the word is that the rights to all of Tupac’s music will reportedly revert back to his mother at the end of the year.

Morgan Creek are wanting to get things off the ground quite quickly following the huge $200 million + success of Universal’s Straight Outta Compton, a film in which Tupac featured.

Boom seemed absolutely delighted with the news reaching the internet of his securing of the high-profile job.

“I am blessed with the opportunity of a lifetime. Telling the story of this revolutionary, artist, visionary, genius, soldier! I will make him proud and uphold the legacy,” he said on Instagram.

We’re guessing that work on the 2Pac biopic will start sometime in 2016 for a potential 2017 release. If that changes, we’ll let you know.
