Update: Deadline have debunked the rumours of Cruise casting in The Mummy reboot, saying “both Universal and the star’s people tell Deadline adamantly that no deal with Cruise is in the works for the film.”
It looks like Universal are really going for it in terms of their planned monster movie universe. Yesterday we heard that they want Angelina Jolie for The Bride Of Frankenstein and now it seems that Tom Cruise is being courted for a role in The Mummy reboot.
The Mummy will kick off the monster universe in 2017, which is being curated by Alex Kurtzman and Chris Morgan, and Cruise is officially in talks to star in an unknown role, so says Variety.
The screenplay for The Mummy will be written by Jon Spaihts and should Cruise sign on the dotted line, he will start work on the flick between shooting the new Jack Reacher film, which is lensing currently, and the sixth Mission: Impossible movie which kicks off production in August of next year. Cruise is also thought to be involved in the development of the film as well, though the trade do say that he will not be producing.
Not much is yet known about the Cruise casting, or The Mummy reboot as a whole, except for the fact that it will be set in the present day. We’ll bring you more on the movie as we have it.
