A new writer has been found for the long-planned Freddie Mercury biopic. Anthony McCarten (The Theory Of Everything) has been hired by GK Films to write the biopic of the late, legendary Queen frontman, and SPECTRE star Ben Whishaw is the hot favourite to play the lead.
The film is now being referred to as Bohemian Rhapsody, named after the famous Queen song. The film has had a host of big names attached to star in it in the past, the most recent being Sacha Baron-Cohen who, I feel, would have absolutely nailed it as Mercury. He departed the project citing ‘creating differences’ a little while back. The rumours were that Cohen was unhappy over the direction that the film was heading, and reportedly wanted to examine a few of the darker elements of the Queen story.
The film already has a draft by award-winning scribe Peter Morgan, and it’s not clear as to whether the Oscar-nominated McCarten is having another crack at that draft, or starting from scratch. We hope that this one gets on track soon as the music of Queen, and Freddie himself, are still very much-loved to this day, nearly 24 years to the day after the death of the music icon.
Sony Pictures will have first dibs on the project when McCarten’s script is in. Ben Whishaw remains unattached, but continues to lead as the hot favourite. Who do you think should play the Queen legend?
