In UK cinemas from today is the glorious British comedy/ drama The Lady In The Van, which stars the magnificent Maggie Smith and Alex Jennings as Alan Bennett. Bennett adapts his own work, the true story of Miss Shepherd (Smith), a woman of uncertain origins who “temporarily” parked her van in Bennett’s London driveway and proceeded to live there for 15 years. What begins as a begrudged favor becomes a relationship that will change both their lives.
Filmed on the street and in the house where Bennett and Miss Shepherd lived all those years, acclaimed director Nicholas Hytner reunites with Bennett (The Madness of King George, The History Boys) to bring this touching, poignant, and life-affirming story to the screen.
We have a world exclusive featurette for the film, which we gave five stars to when we first caught it at October’s London Film Festival. Do try and seek this out this weekend as it truly is one of the best British films of the year.
Our featurette features interviews with director Hytner, Alan Bennett, Maggie Smith and producer Kevin Loader who all talk about working on the movie, and filming in and around the actual locations where the true story actually took place. Check it out below.
The Lady In The Van opens in UK cinemas today, Friday 13th November.
