We can’t help but feel a little disappointed at the last two Die Hard sequels. While Die Hard 4.0, or Live Free Or Die Hard if you’re Stateside, wasn’t that bad, the fifth movie, A Good Day To Die Hard certainly didn’t hit anywhere near the mark. Somewhere along the way the filmmakers, studio, producers etc. have lost their way and the whole thinking behind what made the first Die Hard great, but an independent film producer hopes to change all of that with his Die Hard 6 story idea..

Despite an official Die Hard 6 being in the works, which is being pitched as a prequel and sequel with Len Wiseman (Die Hard 4) directing, indie film writer and producer Eric D. Wilkinson took out a full-page ad in The Hollywood Reporter to pitch his idea for a new movie to Bruce Willis, producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura, and Len Wiseman.

Stating that he is a huge Die Hard fan, which soon becomes obvious when you read his idea, Wilkinson pitches an idea for Die Hard: Year One, which the filmmakers are already calling the planned new movie. In keeping with the 1979 prequel and modern-day sequel, Wilkinson pitches the following:

Former hero cop John McClane, 60 years old and beat to shit, is a convicted felon being carted off to federal prison. Why?

Flashback to 1979, where 24-year-old New York City Patrol Officer John McClane is part of a team of cops assigned to investigate the murder of 6-year-old Ethan Peller, working under the direction of up-and-coming Detective Stan Winshaw. Strong police work leads McClane to suspect possible sex trafficker Clarence Sutton, who mysteriously vanishes moments before McClane can make the arrest. The rule-breaking McClane and his superior Winshaw butt heads. The trail goes cold and the case is never solved. When McClane makes unprovable accusations about Winshaw, he is transferred to the city’s bleakest division.

34 years later, Detective John McClane takes personal leave and heads to Moscow to help his estranged son, who is being tried in a Russian court. While McClane is out of the country the remains of Clarence Sutton are discovered, not only with DNA evidence linking Sutton to the murder of Ethan Peller, but additional evidence that ties McClane to Sutton’s killing.

Now for the part which makes this quite a good idea for a Die Hard movie.

Here’s a section of the ad, which explains the Die Hard element of the proposed story.

So, basically Die Hard in a prison, which perfectly keeps the formula which we’ve grown to love over at least the first three movies. So, now this is in the public domain, what will come of it?

We’ve not seen any from any of the filmmakers as yet, but we love the idea. Wilkinson also includes an email at the bottom of the ad, which you can read in its entirety below.
