Book review: Titan Books extensive ‘Back to the Future: The Ultimate Visual History’

2015-10-14 19.54.01We all know that in Back to the Future Part II, Marty and Doc Brown travel to Hill Valley and arrive on October 21, 2015 and although some of their future hopes for technology may not exactly have come true, this book delves deep into the BTTF world as we hit the 30th Anniversary of the beloved franchise with a huge array of insight and then some.

Titan Books’ Back to the Future: The Ultimate Visual History isn’t your usual ‘behind-the-scenes’ malarkey, oh no, and it got us all more than a little excited. We should know better as adults but when opened on a removable lenticular photograph of Marty’s family disappearing and reappearing, well, we’re hooked like Doc on the Clock Tower.

Featuring a foreword from Michael J Fox along with the preface by Christopher Lloyd it’s safe to say all the right elements are merged. Throw in an introduction from Bob Gale and an eventual afterword from director Robert Zemeckis, there’s 88MPH and more for fans of all ilks to get their fix. Extensively researched, assembled and written by Michael Klastorin, a production publicist on Part II and III, alongside Randal Atamaniuk (a genuine BTTF expert), the coffee table book explores the whole story behind the making these three films. Mixing up interviews from a whole host of main stars that include Fox, Lloyd, Lea Thompson and more, there’s also insight from the crew as we’re invited to explore everything from concept art, that now infamous recasting, how iconic scenes were staged and more to boot.

This isn’t just a few images and after thoughts, it’s extensive and comprehensive. The intros give it a great heart from the start and as you discover more around the sheer madness of the ideas, it’s amazing how much love remains and testament to the specifics of just seeing what they could do with time travel and making it as much fun as they could.

Do you what makes Back to the Future: The Ultimate Visual History even better? The fancy extras. Want that the Jaws 19 poster? It’s included to pull out. Want that ‘A Match Made in Space’ by George McFly book cover? It’s yours. In fact, and you’re probably sensing my probably slightly unprofessional over-excitement by now, there’s a whole host of special features that give this love-in a definite edge over similar collections I’ve encountered before.

In the words of Michael J Fox in his foreword ‘Wow. October 21, 2015. We made it.‘ – We certainly did Marty and this book is an astonishingly mighty fine addition to the celebrations.

Books? You’ll definitely need this one where you’re going…
