Preview update:
According to various reports this morning, Straight Outta Compton helmer F. Gary Gray, could become the Furious 8 director before the week’s out. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Gray, who achieved huge success with Universal’s N.W.A. biopic earlier this year, is at the top of a very short list of filmmakers in line for the lucrative job of bringing Fast and the Furious 8 to cinemas in 2017.
We’ve just been alerted to an article over on Deadline that says that Gray is a lock for the film, but this is unconfirmed. This is what was said.
After a meeting that took place tonight between Furious franchise star Vin Diesel and Straight Outta Compton director F. Gary Gray, Diesel posted a picture of himself and the director on his Facebook page.
Now, let’s not count our chickens. Also in that ‘most wanted’ list is Now You See Me director Louis Letterier who has a fairly solid background in the genre with films like Unleashed, The Transporter and Clash Of The Titans in the can. Also in the mix, and a really interesting prospect, is You’re Next director Adam Wingard, whose last film was the impressive The Guest.
The three directors are all reportedly set to meet with star/ producer Vin Diesel and the studio this week, but I’ve got to say that the most obvious choice is Gray, a filmmaker that has history with working for Diesel in revenge film A Man Apart a few years back. He also has some solid clout with the studio following the delivery of a well received movie, both critically and commercially, in Straight Outta Compton earlier this year, and has a solid action background; after all, he did direct The Italian Job remake, and while not particularly amazing, it did contain some solid action set-pieces.
Whatever happens, the Furious 8 director decision is one that will have to be made soon (if it hasn’t already), because, after all, Universal is very keen on that April 2017 release that it set a little while ago. Diesel will obviously be returning in the film as Dominic Toretto, though no further cast members have been confirmed, though Dwayne Johnson says that he will return. We did hear a little while ago that the film will have more to do with Kurt Russell’s character from Furious 7, and would potentially be set in New York City, this time around.
More news as we get it.
