F Gary Gray to direct Black Panther?

We’re not quite sure what is going on at the moment with F. Gary Gray. Just earlier this morning, we reported that it was looking highly likely that the Straight Outta Compton director was the man to direct the next Fast and Furious movie after Vin Diesel himself posted an image of the two of them together on his official Facebook page. The latest rumour is that Gray may be heading for the Marvel Cinematic Universe to direct the Black Panther movie.

The news of him being a contender was mentioned as just that in an article of over at Variety. The last person that we heard as being attached to the high-profile gig was Ava DuVernay, who reportedly turned the job down.

So here’s the deal. Gray probably isn’t going to be able to do both. Fast 8, or Furious 8, or whatever they decide to call it, is due in cinemas in April of 2017, which pretty much makes it an immediate go in terms of pre-production etc. Black Panther is set for release the following year, so prep on that is looking at a start in about a year or so from now, or in early 2017 at the latest, which will probably see Gray still in post on Furious 8. Potentially, it could be possible to do both, but both of these movies’ release dates are pretty much set in stone. It would be cool if he could do both though, but what a back-to-back that would be.

Gray is hot property following his Straight Outta Compton success earlier this year, and deservedly so. With such films as The Italian Job, Law Abiding Citizen, A Man Apart and Be Cool under his belt, he’s proven to be a great all-rounder in terms of director, and he sure can direct action!

We’ll probably hear a major update on this before the week’s out, but click on over here to read the full article with the Black Panther reference over at Variety here.

Chadwick Boseman will star as Wakandan leader T’Challa, a.k.a. Black Panther, and the film will hit cinemas on July 6th, 2018, following an appearance in the upcoming Captain America: Civil War next March. A look at Boseman’s costume for that movie can be found over here.
