Goonies theatre production possible for an off-Broadway debut in near future
A few months ago, a Back To The Future musical was announced, and now it looks like another 1980s movie favourite is heading to the stage as Richard Donner has announced that a Goonies theatre production is set for the near-future.
The project looks bound for New York, and is said to be an ‘immersive theater production,’ which Donner is actively involved in.
Donner, who directed the original Goonies movie, spoke with Yahoo! Movies.
“We’re going to do an off-Broadway, do you know what immersion theatre is? Where there’s no seats, the venue is you go into a warehouse and there’s something happening in that warehouse and that’s the play you’ve come to see, only you become part of it and you travel through with actors. It’s very popular now. We’re doing one on The Goonies. It will take another year or so but it’s going to be wonderful.”
Sounds great, and a little bit like the Star Wars Secret Cinema thing we went to back at the start of the summer; with the film screening being substituted by an actual theatre production.
The legendary director also gave an update on the planned ‘Goonies’ sequel, which has been whispered for some time now.
“Again, everything takes a long time to get it right. If you do things fast and quick and easy, that’s a disservice. But if there were going to be another movie it would take us a long time to get it right, because we have a lot of history that we’re involved with and a lot of integrity that we have to keep to what once was, and lives a life of its own without destroying it. Maybe the powers that be are working on something.”
Sounds like that is a little while off then…
Here’s some other bad news. It seems that the same article has revealed that at least one character won’t be back for any future movie.
[quote_box_center]”…even if Donner and Steven Spielberg find a story that they like, we won’t see a complete reunion, because Jeff Cohen reassured us that he has hung up his Hawaiian shirt for a career as a prominent entertainment attorney and author.”[/quote_box_center]
