Experimental and phenomenal director Todd Haynes has been receiving some incredible praise for his first effort since 2007’s I’m Not There. His next film, Carol, has already been selected as the American Express Gala screening for the London Film Festival, before a 27th November release date, meaning it’s looking good come awards season.
The film sees a same-sex relationship develop between two female department store workers in the 1950s. Rooney Mara takes the lead role, while Cate Blanchett is the object of her affection, the titular Carol. It’s a theme and world that Haynes has triumphed in before with the unparalleled Far From Heaven being one of the best films of the 00’s.
Watch now:
Based on the novel The Price Of Salt by Patricia Highsmith, the film looks set to ground Haynes in reality again. The director has been known for experimental storytelling, such as Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story told entirely with Barbie dolls, and I’m Not There looking at moments of Bob Dylan‘s life and career, with Dylan played by a multitude of actors.
Carol hits UK cinemas on 27th November. It stars Rooney Mara, Cate Blanchett, Sarah Paulson, Kyle Chandler, and Jake Lacey.
Luke likes many things, films and penguins being among them. He's loved films since the age of 9, when STARGATE and BATMAN FOREVER changed the landscape of modern cinema as we know it. His love of film extends to all aspects of his life, with trips abroad being planned around film locations and only buying products featured in Will Smith movies. His favourite films include SEVEN SAMURAI, PASSION OF JOAN OF ARC, IN BRUGES, LONE STAR, GODZILLA, and a thousand others.
