Director Josh Trank responds to Fantastic Four reviews: “I had a fantastic version of this.”
I caught Josh Trank‘s Fantastic Four just yesterday, and you can read my full review of Fantastic Four over here if you want. If you do read it, you’ll see that my two-star review of the film is quite scathing, but I didn’t hate it. There is a bloody good film in there somewhere, but through some ill-judged decisions, particularly during the rushed final third, the movie turns out to be a big scrambled mess that falls very flat.
Allow me to indulge you with my frank summing up.
“Great independent storytelling in the middle, topped with corporate icing that makes you feel sick when you’re done with it.”
I guess what I’m trying to say is I can see where this was trying to be taken, and following a tweet by director Josh Trank, which has since been deleted, Trank alludes to the fact that a very different version existed once upon a time…
“A year ago I had a fantastic version of this”, tweeted Trank. “And it would’ve recieved great reviews. You’ll probably never see it. That’s reality though.”
Here’s the grab.
Make of that what you will, and who knows what has been going on, but I’m truly gutted for the studio and the potential franchise, as I like the core of what was trying to be said with the movie.
The numbers will be interesting this week, which we’ll of course report back on come Sunday as I’m guessing that this is where decisions will be made as to whether a Fantastic Four 2 happens, despite it already having a release date already set for a couple of years time.
We’re guessing that if that does turn out to happen, Trank won’t be a part of it.
