They haven’t appeared on-screen since their 2005 effort Mr. and Mrs. Smith, but now a married couple in real-life, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have squared off in the upcoming drama By The Sea. We’ve just received the first By The Sea trailer, which you can see below.

This is a very different effort to their previous movie, and revolves around a couple kicking about France as their marriage is on the verge of collapse.

Here’s the proper, official plot:

Set in France during the mid-1970s, Vanessa, a former dancer, and her husband Roland, an American writer, travel the country together. They seem to be growing apart, but when they linger in one quiet, seaside town they begin to draw close to some of its more vibrant inhabitants, such as a local bar/café-keeper and a hotel owner.

Niels Arestrup, Melvil Poupaud, Melanie Laurent and Richard Bohringer also star in the film. By The Sea marks the latest directing effort from Jolie, who delivered the promising Unbroken last year, and In The Land Of Blood And Honey in 2012. Expectations are high for this.

Jolie also wrote and co-produced this high-profile drama, which is heading to cinemas through Universal Pictures in November, which pretty much slots slap-bang in the middle of awards season; so, are the studio potentially going to push this as much as they can to garner the attention of voters? It looks like it.

The film looks visually stunning, with cinematographer Christian Berger (The White Ribbon) using his Cine Reflect Lighting System to shoot the movie.

By The Sea opens on November 13th in domestic territories, and December 11th in the UK.
