The 1982 original featured the classic line: “If only you could see what I’ve seen with your eyes.” That quote was never more apt, as BLADE RUNNER 2 has hired cinematographer Roger Deakins to paint with light on the much-anticipated sequel.
Well-known for his diverse collaborations with directors such as the Coen Brothers, Deakins’ trip to a futuristic Los Angeles reunites him with helmer Denis Villeneuve. They previously joined forces on PRISONERS and SICARIO. The tale will take audiences back to the genre-defining urban setting of Ridley Scott’s oft-re-released masterpiece, and a world of dirty detectives and runaway replicants. Ryan Gosling is reportedly to star, alongside grizzled robot catcher par excellence Harrison Ford.
Alcon Entertainment are producing Hampton Fancher and Michael Green’s script, derived from Philip K Dick’s Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep? and a story co-created by Scott. Though the lack of his unmatchable eye behind the camera is a huge loss, the presence of Deakins ensures that quality is going to be the order of the day, in a follow-up fans everywhere are praying won’t crumple the legacy of the first film like an origami unicorn.
