The famous New York City toy store, F.A.O Schwarz, that featured in the popular 1988 Tom Hanks movie BIG, is to close its doors on Fifth Avenue after a staggering 145 years. According to the New York Times, owners Toys ‘R’ Us are looking for a new location for the famous store elsewhere in the city.
The reason for the closure is down to apparent rising rents in its current, prestigious location, and is looking for a lower cost option.
F.A.O. Schwarz was the setting for the famous piano scene in Penny Marshall’s brilliant family movie about a 12-year-old boy ‘wished he were big.’ The mysterious Zoltar fortune-telling machine, now also housed at the NYC toy store, grants his wish to come true, and the following morning he wakes up in the body of a 30-year-old Tom Hanks.
The store will close in July.
