It was arguably the biggest tease of the year – having announced a revival of his and Mark Frost’s cult mystery series Twin Peaks, esoteric director David Lynch went on to exit the project, citing a lack of funds as the cause.
Now, after some negotiations with producer Showtime, Lynch has agreed to return as co-writer and director. Just as well – all nine episodes of the limited series were completed before his departure, leaving fans choking on their trademark coffee and cherry pie at the thought of their hopes being dashed inches from the final hurdle.
The news broke an hour ago via Lynch’s Twitter account:
Dear Twitter Friends, the rumors are not what they seem ….. It is !!! Happening again. #TwinPeaks returns on @SHO_Network
— David Lynch (@DAVID_LYNCH) May 16, 2015
Such was the impact of his backing out, the cast of the original show launched a “Save Twin Peaks” campaign to persuade him to rejoin the fold. Kyle McLachlan has been confirmed to reprise his lead role of FBI Special Agent Dale Cooper and others have mentioned their involvement unofficially.
The third season was supposed to air next year, though whether this brief pause will have a knock on effect remains to be seen. In the meantime Frost is releasing a book to cover the ground lost in the past quarter of a century.
