NBC Bet On Wesley Snipes As ‘The Player’

Wesley Snipes Reuters 660Amongst the slew of cancellations and green lights currently going on over at the US networks, one infamous name has emerged with a smile on his face – Wesley Snipes.

He’ll be hitting small screens as The Player, a Vegas-based action drama from The Blacklist producers John Davis and John Fox, formerly known as Endgame. Filling out the “John” quota is writer John Rogers, who penned the pilot which has been given a series order.

The high concept premise sees Snipes’ security expert/action man caught in the ultimate high stakes situation – bringing down supercriminals as a shadowy and rich elite bet on the outcome. There’s a personal angle for the hero of course, as someone in the wealthy gambling pool is responsible for his wife’s death, and the supposed pawn is readying himself for a deadly strike.

Co-produced by SPOOKS: THE GREATER GOOD director Bharat Nalluri, the show will co-star Philip Winchester, Charity Wakefield and Damon Gupton.

Better known in recent years for financial irregularities and a prison sentence, Snipes is hoping this could be the vehicle that puts him back at the top. Leaving the BLADE franchise hanging after a troubled third instalment and bulking out buddy Sylvester Stallone’s THE EXPENDABLES, he’s also become associated with a string of cheap and cheerful whup-ass fests that litter DVD shelves and Freeview channels. If The Player has its way that game is going to play itself out once and for all.
