AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON may have only just hit cinemas, but the superhero hype machine has already turned its sights on the film after Marvel’s next MCU instalment, ANT-MAN – in the guise of CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR.
The threequel is shaping up to be something of an ‘Avengers 2.5’, with Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner and more confirmed to return alongside Chris Evans in the titular role. Joining that star-studded cast is Martin Freeman, having gained some familiarity with franchises from Peter Jackson’s HOBBIT trilogy. Marvel’s head honcho Kevin Feige had this to say:
[quote_box_center]”From his roles as Bilbo Baggins and Doctor Watson to Tim in ‘The Office,’ Martin’s range from the dramatic to the comedic has consistently impressed us. We couldn’t be more honored or excited to have such a talented actor join the Marvel Cinematic Universe.”[/quote_box_center]
It’s not clear what role he’ll be playing yet (though it probably won’t be Spider-Man), but a big name like Freeman’s doesn’t necessarily command a leading role in the MCU – just look at Andy Serkis’ role in AGE OF ULTRON. It may be the case that, as with Serkis’ Ulysses Klaw, Freeman’s character becomes more important in future MCU films.
Either that, or Bilbo Baggins just took a wrong turn on the way to Erebor.
CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR stars Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Chris Evans, Jeremy Renner, Elizabeth Olsen, Anthony Mackie, Martin Freeman and Daniel Brühl. It’s due out in UK cinemas on 29th April, 2016.
