Blog Of Thrones 5.4: The Sons Of The Harpy [Contains Spoilers]

Blog of throne 1

It’s back! Can you believe it’s been almost a whole year since we last left the Westeros realm? During that time the hype hasn’t died down any and we’ve all been clambering at the bit, excitedly waiting for Game of Thrones to return. Happily our not so patient waiting is finally over as season five has finally landed.

One of the best things about the show is of course the audience participation, we love to talk about Game of Thrones. THN will be here every week post evening UK transmission to chat about all the inevitable twists, turns and tragic deaths in our Blog of Thrones.

Be warned, only read on if you have seen the fourth episode of season five Sons of the Harpy as this article contains spoilers.

Sons of the Harpy

Writers: David Benioff, D.B Weiss

Director: Mark Mylod

Cast: Kit Harington, Lena Headey, Natalie Dormer, Peter Dinklage, Sophie Turner, Aiden Gillan, Maisie Williams, Carice Van Houton, Iain Glen, Jerome Flynn

Synopsis: The Faith Militant grow increasingly aggressive. Jaime and Bronn head south. Ellaria and the Sand Snakes vow vengeance.

Last week’s show ended with Jorah scooping up Tyrion as he answered a call of nature, decreeing he was going to deliver him to the Queen. As we guessed last week, the Queen in question was of course Daenerys. Once Tyrion realised this twist of fate he fell about laughing. We all know that is exactly where he was going anyway.

The cold war between Margaery and Cersei continues to rage with poor young King Tommen stuck in the middle. In the High Sparrow Cersei has found a way to both piss off Margaery and avoid herself being wedded to Sir Loras. We all know that Laurel prefers the company of other men, and Cersei prefers the company of her brother, and that the Tywin-promised pairing was never going to work. Now Loras’ continued breathing has been called into question as the High Sparrow, head of the Faith Militant, has him locked away for his sins against God, and there’s nothing that anybody, even the King can do about it. To say Queen Margaery is displeased is a vast understatement, just how will she retaliate?

Might Jaime have some feelings for Brienne? He was asking after her island after all; his journey to Dorne taking him past the Emerald island of Tarth. I wonder if we’ll ever see it up close? Jaime and Bronn arrived in Dorne, but the welcoming committee wasn’t particularly warm. The original plan of sneaking onto the island to rescue Princess Myrcella went up in a puff of smoke with the pair having to fight for their survival from the very beginning. This was the first real fight for Jaime since losing his hand and being given that gold one, and it looks like he’s finally found a use for it in battle. Which is lucky, especially as their mission has been rumbled by a quartet of feisty females.

We met Oberyn’s illegitimate daughters Obara, Tyene, and Nymeria. Their mother Ellaria wanted to recruit her daughters to her cause, not that they needed much persuasion. They all seem to be a chip off of the old block, with high values of honour and an insatiable thirst for vengeance. They are pretty lethal with a whip as well, and surely they win the burying people in sand contest? These ladies know about Jaime and are unperturbed, they will avenge Oberyn, just like he wanted to avenge his sister.

Jon Snow is in danger; he gallantly fought off the advances of Red Priestess Melisandre. Maybe Jon heard what happened to the technically-true heir to the throne Gendry. She doesn’t strike me as a woman to say no to. His mind was on other things at the time of her proposition, he’d just had to sign a letter asking Roose Bolton for help. Yet again Jon finds his two worlds his loyalty to his old Stark family and his new loyalty to the Nights Watch conflicting. The Watch are in dire need of men and supplies, as Sam pointed out 50 men can’t watch the wall (especially with this White Walkers knocking around), but Roose Bolton slaughtered his brother in cold blood.

Sansa is settling back into her home at Winterfell quite nicely. Her people haven’t forgotten her and are exceptionally pleased that they have her back once more. Littlefinger is leaving her to return to King’s Landing – he needs to continue keeping up appearances with the Lannister’s and it will be nice to see Sansa removed from his influence, if only for a short while.

Then we arrived at our first cliffhanger ending of the season. Who will survive? Grey Worm or Barristan Selmy? With it being Game of Thrones they could of course both be dead, though I think it’s more likely that Grey Worm will survive (for now at least). With Barristan gone Daenerys will be in dire need of an advisor and isn’t Sir Friendzone/ Jorah on his way back?

The fourth episode has seen the pace pick up within the Meeren plot, however everywhere else still seems to be just ticking along. Seeds are still being sown with us still being introduced to new characters which, given that next week’s instalment, will see us reach the half way mark. That means we don’t have long left. How quickly this show vanishes again.

[usr=4] Game Of Thrones airs on HBO in North America, and Sky Atlantic in the UK and Ireland.
