Nowadays if you say the word “Cube” people think of the lacklustre game show hosted by Phillip Schofield. Viewers with long memories however may remember CUBE, a sci-fi horror movie with a neat central concept from the late Nineties.
It followed seven strangers trying to escape a booby-trapped futuristic prison, predating the likes of SAW, and made an impression due to its imagination in the face of a low budget. Vincenzo Natali was the writer/director of the Canadian effort.
Saman Kesh is reportedly to create a reboot of the film, alongside producers Roy Lee and Jon Spaihts. Whilst Kesh’s name may not ring any bells, Lee produced THE LEGO MOVIE and Spaihts wrote PROMETHEUS, though it’s not known whether he’ll be on scripting duties also.
UK TV watchers may be interested to know the Horror Channel is airing CUBE, if you want to get an idea of what the original is like before the big guns go in to give it a refurb.
