New ‘Dragon Ball’ Series On The Way

Dragon Ball Z Battle Of GodsDragon Ball has been away from TV screens for 18 years. Of course the dub came a bit later, so it doesn’t seem that long, and both Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z have only been released on DVD in recent years, as well as the latest movies DRAGON BALL Z: BATTLE OF THE GODS and the upcoming DRAGON BALL Z: RESURRECTION F keeping the franchise alive on the big screen.

It’s true, Dragon Ball is never too far from us and it’s about to come back in a big new way. Toei Animation have announced that Dragon Ball Super is in production and will debut in Japan this July. Based on the comic created by Akira Toriyama, the Dragon Ball series all recount the adventures of super powered fighters as they bring the fight to Earth.

Producer of Fuji Television, Osamu Nozaki, announced his excitement:

“Having loved Dragon Ball since childhood, it is very exciting to be a part of this project. Mr. Toriyama has developed a plot that’s not only a dream come true for Dragon Ball’s millions of fans, but one that will foster in a new generation of viewers.”

Meanwhile, Atsushi Kido, producer for Toei Animation, sees this as a great honour, and a chance to revisit old stomping grounds:

When I joined Toei Animation, one of my first assignments saw me working on the production of Dragon Ball Z. While there for only a short period of time, being a part of the series left a lasting impression. We look forward to carrying on Dragon Ball’s tremendous legacy, bringing audiences a brand new Dragon Ball with the same sense of heart and commitment that went into past Dragon Ball productions.”

Here’s hoping that Dragon Ball Z Super will be another epic and important series, as it follows the world of Dragon Ball after Goku managed to save the world from the destruction of Marjin Bu. It will be very interesting to see how a show that redefined the art form and set the stage for so many shows will now integrate back into the world.
