Everyone’s favourite web-slinger has been rebooted onscreen more times than a prison football. Yet after two movie franchises, an upcoming appearance in CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR and another reimagining in the works (supposedly under director Drew Goddard), Sony aren’t quite done with creating new escapades for SPIDER-MAN. They’ve just announced an animated instalment that will plough its own furrow away from the established canon(s).

CinemaCon was the venue for the project to be announced, and it’s clear this won’t be just another hastily-drawn spin-off going straight to DVD. The studio have hired THE LEGO MOVIE’s Phil Lord and Chris Miller to devise, produce and hopefully direct the new spectacular. No word on voice casting, though presumably some big names will be heading to Marvel’s recording booth.

It’s going to be a busy time for Peter Parker’s spandex-clad alter-ego. He’ll be getting between Chris Evans’ Captain America and Robert Downey Jr’s Iron Man for the former’s latest entry before heading back to high school for the latest attempt to generate another series of big screen adventures. Actors reportedly wanted for the flesh and blood version in 2017 include Asa Butterfield and Nat Wolff, inheriting the mantle from Andrew Garfield, who left after becoming dissatisfied with the direction of the character.

Lord and Miller’s take on Spidey has been scheduled for July 20th, 2018.
