She played two very diverse roles last year in OCULUS and GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY. Now genre favourite Karen Gillan’s movie career has received a major boost as she took Best Female Newcomer at the Jameson Empire Awards.
The prestigious honour saw her sharing the bill with Andy Serkis (Best Actor), Rosamund Pike (Best Actress) and Christopher Nolan (Best Director/Empire Inspiration). She fought off strong competition from the likes of Essie Davis (THE BABADOOK) and Gugu Mbatha-Raw (BELLE). Taron Egerton picked up Best Male Newcomer for KINGSMAN: THE SECRET SERVICE. The ceremony was held last night at the Grosvenor House Ballroom in London.
Other guests included current Doctor Who Peter Capaldi. Gillan notably had her own stint in the TARDIS, and acted with Capaldi during the David Tennant era before they were both cast in the key roles of Amy Pond and The Doctor.
A ringing endorsement from Britain’s biggest movie magazine is an epic seal of approval, and should put Gillan in the frame for some exciting roles in future. In the meantime she’s prepping for HBO’s witch hunter pilot The Devil You Know with Eddie Izzard, as well as anticipating another encounter with the barber’s clippers for GUARDIANS 2.
We at THN are big GOTG fans and would like to congratulate Karen on her well-deserved win. Here’s the rundown on all the other big gong collectors:
