Idris Elba is easily one of our greatest and most versatile home-grown actors. The Luther star has proven this many times over the past decade, in roles ranging from a battle-hardened commander in PACIFIC RIM, to South African President Nelson Mandela.
Of course, this has undoubtedly put the London-born actor in extremely high demand, with rumours even placing him as Daniel Craig’s future Bond successor. Now, it has been revealed that Elba has entered early talks to play the lead baddie in Justin Lin’s STAR TREK 3. Previous rumours had placed Bryan Cranston as the newest adversary for Kirk and his crew, however it is unknown if he was up for the same role, or merely that talks have now broken down.
While some may still be dissapointed that J.J. Abrams will no longer helm the film, Simon Pegg’s involvement as co-writer was definitely music to the ears of many die-hard fans. Also, Elba’s (potential) involvement in STAR TREK 3 probably rules out a substantial return from Benedict Cumberbatch as Khan. Although, with Marvel Studios locking Cumberbatch down for a long future as Doctor Strange, this probably shouldn’t come as too much of a shock.
STAR TREK 3 will be released on July 8th 2016. The film (currently) stars Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, Simon Pegg, John Cho and Anton Yelchin.
