Any mention of Adam Sandler in a movie and I’m immediately cautious. Tell me he co-stars with Kevin James and I’m out. So it says a lot about the first trailer for Sony’s PIXELS that I am genuinely interested and a little excited. The film sees aliens use classic video game characters in order to invade our planet, after believing a time capsule sent into space by NASA in 1982 was actually an act of war. If it sounds silly, that’s because it is, and it embraces that fact.
Sandler and James, along with Michelle Monaghan, Josh Gad, and Peter Dinklage, play our last hope against the invading aliens. The film looks like a mixture between WRECK-IT RALPH and GHOSTBUSTERS, and certainly seems to get the action/comedy balance right. Chris Columbus, of HOME ALONE and HARRY POTTER AND THE PHILOSOPHER’S STONE fame, directs, and the special effects bring these classic pixelated characters such as Pac-man and Donkey Kong to life.
After originally reporting on this some 4 years ago, PIXELS is released on 24th July in the US and 12th August in the UK. It stars Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Michelle Monaghan, Josh Gad, Peter Dinklage, Jane Krakowski, Ashley Benson, Sean Bean, and Brian Cox.
