Steve Martin’s serious side appears all too infrequently, though that’s about to change now he’s signed up for director Ang Lee’s BILLY LYNN’S LONG HALFTIME WALK.
Adapted from the 2012 novel by Ben Fountain, the story focuses on a Dallas Cowboys game at Thanksgiving, where the members of military outfit Bravo Squad are being recognized for their contribution in Iraq. Naturally this venue sets the scene for flashbacks to traumatic times and the opening of old wounds. Martin’s role is not yet known, but he’ll appear alongside Joe Alwyn and Garrett Hedlund.
Intriguingly the book mentions Destiny’s Child as the halftime act, who Bravo guest with as part of the festivities. Beyonce herself enticed the comedian in misfiring THE PINK PANTHER, so perhaps a reunion of sorts is on the cards.
In recent years Martin has focused on big screen comedy, plying his thoughtful trade as a writer and musician in other areas. Working for the helmer of such films as CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON and LIFE OF PI should see him making a memorable addition to the cast.
