CBS have annnounced that Mehcad Brooks is to play photographer and ally of Krypton Jimmy Olsen in Supergirl, opposite Melissa Benoist. I always remember Olsen as portrayed by Marc McClure in the classic Christopher Reeve movie franchise. He was a well-meaning dope of sorts, kitted out like a Harvard professor but loyal and likeable.
This time out, he isn’t a Daily Planet employee but a lenser at Benoist’s workplace CatCo, where Kara Danvers/Supergirl spends her no-fly time. And as is the way with these things he is hiding a big secret. He’ll also be a prospective love interest of Benoist’s in a sort of reverse of the Clark Kent/Lois Lane relationship.
Brooks was the lead in the Necessary Roughness TV series and featured in the big screen remake of ABOUT LAST NIGHT. You may also remember him as “Eggs” in True Blood.
It’s high times for fans of the Superman brand, with Supergirl adding to DC’s bulging roster, alongside Henry Cavill reprising the Man of Steel for BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE and a Krypton-set small screen saga in the works. Arrow and The Flash co-developer Greg Berlanti is writing Supergirl with Ali Adler for Berlanti Productions.
