Chris Weitz has taken over from Gary Whitta as scriptwriter on the forthcoming STAR WARS origins film. Weitz’s credits include adaptations of ABOUT A BOY and His Dark Materials (THE GOLDEN COMPASS), so he appears a reasonable choice to balance the elements needed for a sci-fi actioner with mass appeal.
Director Gareth Edwards is to focus on a popular character from the franchise’s ever-expanding universe. Though the subject isn’t known, it is believed to be someone from the original trilogy. Intriguingly, Rooney Mara and Felicity Jones have apparently been talking to the director about a possible role. Might this suggest a younger Leia could be front and centre for the instalment?
The standalone project will hit cinemas in December next year, twelve months after Disney launch the much-anticipated EPISODE VII: THE FORCE AWAKENS.
