Taken 3 Takes A Huge $40m In Its Opening Weekend In North America

I’ve just seen a great quote referring to Liam Neeson’s latest outing as Bryan Mills. “Taken 3 makes Taken 2 look like Taken.” If you’ve seen the first two movies you’ll have an idea of what that means for the third film in the series, which opened in a ton of countries this weekend. News reaches us this evening that TAKEN 3 has managed to become the second biggest opening January movie in North America this past weekend, taking in a reported $40.4 million since Friday. That’s pretty decent. In fact, it’s bloody massive considering that the film cost around $48 million to make (with a huge proportion of that reportedly going to its leading man).

Add to its $40.4 million the $52 million it has taken abroad and you’ve got another belting hit for Fox, and we’re just three days in.

The final numbers are still being posted, but the executives on the Fox lot are sure to be rubbing their hands this Golden Globes weekend. Now, if only they could persuade Liam Neeson to dabble with his set of skills just one more time…

FYI, the highest grossing January movie was the equally dire RIDE ALONG last year.
