Guillermo del Toro Takes Us To ‘Carnival Row’

Guillermo-Del-Toro

Writer Travis Beacham must have given up all hope of seeing his film script A KILLING ON CARNIVAL ROW brought to life. He sold it a decade ago, but producers New Line and Kopleson Entertainment couldn’t get the period fantasy horror off the cobbled ground. However his prayers have just been answered in an unexpected way, thanks to Legendary Television, who managed to land the project in the lap of visionary director Guillermo del Toro. Shifting the story to the small screen, it is now titled Carnival Row and the narrative will be expanded into a saga with Del Toro on co-writing/directing duties for the pilot. Sounding like a cross between FROM HELL and Sky’s Penny Dreadful, Carnival Row is a Victorian detective thriller set in a city where humans co-exist with monsters and mythological/fairy tale creatures. Naturally a murderer is at large, and the ensuing investigation presumably forms the core of the series.

This type of world merging is meat and drink to Del Toro, who has brought us the likes of PAN’S LABYRINTH and HELLBOY, as well as his own show The Strain. Amazon Studios are producing with Legendary and Del Toro collaborator Gary Ungar. Rene Echevarria will also be writing and exec-producing alongside the director and Beacham. Del Toro’s next cinematic outing is the gothic romance CRIMSON PEAK.
