Amazon Studios is on a cyber roll, with Alpha House, Transparent and most recently Mozart In The Jungle all receiving good notices and strong ratings. But one announced project that won’t make it to series is The After, Chris Carter’s drama about “eight strangers forced to survive in a violent world that defies explanation”. Perhaps this was too vague for the entertainment/commerce giant, who have decided not to proceed after a pilot was shown on Amazon Prime nearly a year ago. This is perhaps surprising for its customers, as Amazon give the go ahead to shows partly based on viewer feedback.
Carter’s reputation as creator of The X-Files may have guaranteed an audience – however, this wasn’t to be. The After, coming across like a blending of Lost and Survivors and featuring a diverse cast including Adrian Pasdar and Jamie Kennedy, is evidence that despite a rigorous selection process, this new type of programme-making is as prone to failure as the traditional method.
