It is confirmed. Scarlett Johansson has officially accepted the lead role in the planned GHOST IN THE SHELL movie.
The actress was officially offered the role a little while ago, and today we’ve learned via Variety, that she’s officially in on the Rupert Sanders directed action film, which is written by William Wheeler, based on the comic-book series by Masamune Shirow.
The source material led to numerous anime film adaptations, a TV series and a series of video games. Yes, it’s pretty big in Japan.
Via WikiPedia: Ghost in the Shell follows the hunt of the public security agency Section 9 for a mysterious hacker known as the Puppet Master. With the assistance of her team, Motoko Kusanagi tracks and finds their suspect, only to be drawn into a complex sequence of political intrigue and a cover-up as to the identity and goals of the Puppet Master.
The project is housed over at Dreamworks, and is heading for a May 2016 release date. Ari Arad and Steven Paul produce.
Scarlett Johansson will next be seen in Joss Whedon’s AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON.
