Police procedural drama collides with superhero action in Powers, the new series adapted from the Icon comic book coming soon on the Playstation Network. And to complement EW’s cast portraits of last year, co-creator Brian Michael Bendis has posted a shot of the main cast together via Tumblr.
You might be forgiven for thinking this was a publicity shot from NCIS if it weren’t for the bright red bodysuit…
… That would be Michelle Forbes as Retro Girl. Perched at the front is Sharlto Copley as cop Christian Walker, with Susan Heyward leaning on the table as partner Deena Pilgrim. Wearing the check shirt is Olesya Rulin as Calista, who in the book takes up the mantle of Retro Girl in the future. Lurking at the back is Noah Taylor as Johnny Royalle, an adversary from Copley’s former days as a costumed crimefighter. There’s no mistaking a seated Eddie Izzard as the ominous-looking “Big Bad” Wolfe.
Alongside Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D and the in-production Jessica Jones with Krysten Ritter, small screen producers are hoping that looking at the fantastical through the prism of “normal” citizens will provide an intriguing alternative to the eye-catching exploits of brightly-coloured justice seekers. Executive-produced by Bendis and artist Michael Avon Oeming, the pilot came courtesy of Charlie Huston (showrunner) and director David Slade.
