Cast: Philip Seymour Hoffman, Christina Hendricks, Richard Jenkins
Certificate: 15
God’s Pocket is a strange kind of town where people protect their own even when they’re setting each other’s houses on fire. The opening sequence of the film tells you immediately that the only thing someone from God’s Pocket cannot forgive is not being from God’s Pocket.
It’s an intriguing dynamic for the town because they protect their own, even if it means going against one of their own. There’s a real sense of misguided loyalty and it seems no matter how hard you try to fit in, if you’re not a native, there’s no hope. Though the concept is a strong one, there is sadly not a single person in the entire film who has any truly redeemable qualities, though there are a few with slightly better motives.
The likes of Philip Seymour Hoffman, Christina Hendricks and Richard Jenkins all lend real acting class to this impressive ensemble piece but it’s not enough. Despite some superb performances, GOD’S POCKET is a wholly miserable piece of cinema that never quite drags itself out of the darkness.
[usr=3] GOD’S POCKET is released on Blu-ray and DVD on January 12th.
