It takes a brave woman to boss Jared Leto and Tom Hardy around, and Warner Bros appear to have found just that as Viola Davis joins the cast of SUICIDE SQUAD. According to reports she will play Amanda Waller, aka “The Wall”, the formidable government mastermind who assembles the squad, known as “Task Force X”. The star of How To Get Away With Murder faces up not only to Leto’s Joker and Hardy’s Rick Flagg, but also Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn, Will Smith’s Deadshot, Cara Delevingne’s Enchantress and Jai Courtney’s Captain Boomerang.
Rumours about who would take the role have included Oprah Winfrey (a bizarre choice in some ways but perhaps an inspired one) and Davis’ THE HELP co-star Octavia Spencer. Waller was created by John Ostrander, Len Wein and John Byrne. She first appeared in the DC Universe in 1986. For one storyline she became part of a warped administration under Lex Luthor as President – Jesse Eisenberg plays Luthor in BATMAN V SUPERMAN, so the potential for crossover is higher than a stilt-walking flea on a giraffe’s head.
David Ayer writes and directs SUICIDE SQUAD, due to be released next August. Davis can currently be seen in James Brown biopic GET ON UP.
