Times were you were lucky to get a movie out of Terrence Malick, the maverick director’s maverick director. Helming BADLANDS and DAYS OF HEAVEN in the Seventies, he then disappeared off the map as a director, with his lush sense of the cinematic leaving a lasting memory. It was 1998 when he finally returned to make war epic THE THIN RED LINE, and it took till 2011’s THE TREE OF LIFE for him to truly kick into gear, bringing us TO THE WONDER in quick succession.
These offerings were lauded and poo-pooed in equal measure, so it’ll be interesting to see the reaction to his latest, the oddly-titled KNIGHT OF CUPS. Christian Bale, Cate Blanchett and Natalie Portman star in this tale of Hollywood excess. Yep that’s right, another one. But under the lens of Malick this may be a twisted trip into Tinseltown you haven’t seen before…
The intriguing cast includes Imogen Poots, Ben Kingsley and veteran actor Brian Dennehy. Perhaps wisely the trailer manages to give you a strong idea of the finished product without delving too deeply into the story, that looks to contain the vivid imagery and pretentious ideas that have thrilled and frustrated critics in equal measure. Released by FilmNation, KNIGHT OF CUPS debuts at the Berlin International Film Festival in February.
